Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

It's nearly Christmas and still no sight of snow. A while ago I was so sure it would finally snow, but no, noooo, the temperature got over 0 again and today it has rained. I would HATE to have a black Christmas. I know you can have Christmas even if you were on Canarian islands, but STILL. Snow belongs to finnish Christmas. And I want to go cross-country skiing! And even though I don't really like going to sled hill, I would like to have that opportunity!

I don't understand people. This morning I read in a magazine, that about 50 % of it's readers (or at least of those who like to answer to those gallups) would NOT like to have snow. Really, even if you don't like snow, you should understand, that this situation tells something about the state of our planet!

Please, let it snow!

These pictures are from last winter and the winter before. Back then we did have snow. (Well, of course it will snow at some point, but I'm worried of how long it will take!)

Dark lady played black magic

My assesment is now finally over and I have (even more) free time.

Of course I could have used this spare time for doing something useful - Christmas cards / presents - but instead I found myself doing absolutely everything but that.
Few months ago I helped my host-mum to clean our stock - and I'm really glad I did, I can't believe all that interesting stuff she was about to throw away! I found some really nice things, but my main found was definitely this little pack of Tarot-cards.

I do not believe in magic.

... But I do find these cards very interesting. There are 78 different cards, and each one of them has a different meaning. They are also separated in the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana - Major cards are more controlling than the Minors, and their meanings are stronger.
Everyone reads the cards as he wants to, but I'm keen on using the three-card-menthod: first card tells the near past, second the present / near future, the third one the long term future. Although with spesific questions I might read it like this: first one represents the main dilemma, the second is how to solve this problem / what to do, the third one is the outcome.

It's been really interesting to see how these cards seem to know everything that happens in my life. Don't tell me they are just showing average, every day things, they _are_not_. But no no no, I still don't believe in them. I'm just killing time.

... But come on! 78 different cards!

The illusionist inside of me

Apparently I've done something really bad because destiny keeps cracking my nails. And it's always the same issue; all your nails are beautifully long and look healthy - then one cracks and it looks absolutely rediculous compared to the others.

I've now been struggling with this annoying thing for weeks, and I have to admit I'm running out of ideas. I truly prefer keeping the rest of my nails as long as they were - or at least longish, I'll _not_ cut all of my pretty ones because of those one or two shorter nails. So I just have to be creative.

The first step is, of course, to avoid all too strong colours and use more natural ones. For an example, the feminin red is gorgeus as always, but it certainly is quite a cruel colour. Fair pink is much better choice, because it leaves the line between nail and skin not so clear.

terribly sorry, the quality is awful as ever

... But as we all know, I usually get pretty bored with that kind of a "typical solutions". This particular one is one of my old favourites. It gives a nice "spark" for the nails, but it's not too weird or obtrusive. And, what's the best, it makes you pay less focus to the lenght of the nails and more to the illustration.

I've also used strong colours (I'm not trying to confuse you, I'm just an artist) with white stripes. The vertical stripes are maybe the easiest way to create some kind of an illusion of longer plane. But when using this technique make always sure that the stripes are made with a brighter colour than the backgroung.

... Ps. I saw an absolutely lovely film today. It was called "Gracie's Choice" and it was about kids who have to grown up before them own parents. Sounds really boring and cliché, but the story was actually very unusual and interesting. I have to give a special credit to the actresses, the main characters did just amazingly well.

Sometimes school is even better than sitting at home

It's 6:00pm and already as dark as at 10pm. I sit at school, waiting to see my friends' theatre production. I have my camera with me, but of course no USB cable, so I can't post any pictures of Helsinki at sunset right now.

I'm really happy I'm still here. All my friends seem to complain how they have been sitting at school when it's already really dark. Well, the sun sets at maybe four, so it's not that big of a deal, but anyway. I've been hanging around for about three hours and for once didn't have to be in such a hurry I usually am. This is really nice. I should probably stop going home between school and hobbies...

The pic is from an arts slash creative writing production I'm in. We're making an exhibition about "Helsinki homes" and it'll go to Turku, Stockholm and *drums* New York. But I'm really kinda sick of it right now... Haha, I'm such a motivated artist.

Mirva has been writing really a lot (haha gotta admit, I didn't even read the movie-post completely yet!) and I've got to apologize for being so lazy in here!! I have school and too many hobbies and already two blogs I try to update as often as I can. In addition I'd also like to have some pauses in between...

Well, the theatre production (about Odysseus) starts in 15 minutes so I'd better get going!

Mirva, I miss you. A lot.

from Helsinki with love,
Ansku

You spin me right round, babe

The weather is getting quite cold.

After a long break I've started knitting again, and this is what I've made so far:

(my host-nephew is a great Buzz Lightyear -fan)

Pretty nice? I can knit anything from scarfs to toys, but I do prefer socks. They are veeery easy and quick to do, but they look really good. And who wouldn't like beautiful, warm woolen socks?

Let's get moving

So finally I've made my way to this point.
I could easily talk about movies more than hours and hours, but I don't want to make you bored. So I've made a little list about the movies I like and would suggest to others. Here's a lots of movies from diffierent genres, and some of them I have picked up only because I find them to be quite interesting - yes, I haven't even seen all these movies I'm going to talk about. But the curiosity isn't always just a bad thing, is it? So if you have time only for a one or two movies in a month, please consider:

 October:
- Here in UK the Halloween is a huge happening. The stores starts to sell all kinds of Halloween-stuff from the very first days of October, and the boom keeps going for the whole month. And what would be better movie for this time period than Tim Burton's classic Sleepy Hollow? The movie is actually one of my favourites of all the times, and I could watch it over and over again without getting bored. I don't usually even like Johnny Depp's movies, but this one is an exception. The actor himself was quite a young man while they were making this movie, and the role of determinent (but also pretty squeamish) young medical examiner is not his most known-ones. As usual, Burton has made good work with this gothic movie, and althought it's not so scary, the athmostphere of the film is absolutely breathtaking. So if you are not afraid of the headless horseman, this is the movie you must see - if you haven't yet.

November:
- After celebrating Halloween you are still in the mood of spooky ghosts and creepy pumpkins, but a part of you is already looking forward to start playing christmas songs and cutting snowflakes to the windows. That's quite a challenging combination, but as we know, Tim Burton has done it again; The nightmare Before Christmas. It is a perfecct movie for the time between Halloween and Christmas. The story is about Jack Skellington (Chris Saradon, Danny Elfman), the pumpking-king of The Halloween-town, who feds up with the whole Halloween. Jack finds The Christmas-town, and starts to spread the merry thought of Christmas all around him - but because Jack is a skeleton and the pumpkin king, he's still a big part of the Halloween-town, and even when he has turned his' coat his' heart still belongs to the Halloween-town - or does it?

December:
- Christmas is the time of being together and calming down. Bake some gingerbread-men and light up a few candles, then take a nice seat and watch a warm, lovefull christmas-movie. I know, there are a lots of crap, cheap movies thats' only points are relationship drama and Christmas, but there are also some real pearls, for an example The Christmas Carol (Walt Disney Entertainment). There are also many other versions of this tale, but I think there's something very special in this movie. Yes, and also Jim Carrey. You probably know the plot from Charles Dickinson's book, but I tell anyway: Scrooge, a mean and greedy (and very, very lonely) old man thinks that the whole Christmas is just a waste of time and money ("Bah! Humbug!"), until something extraordinary happens, and he concretely takes touch with the good - and some bad too - spirits of Christmas. A Very emmotional movie.

The other Christmas-film that I have to mention is It's Very  merry Muppet Christmas Movie. I've seen it once, and I was quite a young, so I don't remember mutch about this film, but I do remember it was lovely, lovely, lovely.
+ one interesting:
I haven't seen this film, but Rare Exports seems quite interesting. It is not as soft and pretty as the two others I mentioned, but that's exactly the point. It is (as far as I know) a very diffierent kind of a Christmas-film, maybe even a little bit scary ( but atleast dark-coloured). When the Santa Claus is not a gentle, warm and lovingly father of Christmas (he's a grumpy, weird, scary old rag) anymore, and the whole beautiful, white, magical winter-wonderland becomes into a huge graveyeard, is there anything you could trust on anymore?

January:
- The new year brings a lots of changes within, but also chances. What would be better way to start the new year with than the true classic LOTR? The Lord Of The Rings -trilogy is the very first proper fantasy film, and it's the mother of all the others. Even if you didn't normally like fantasy movies try these ones. J.R.R Tolkien's world of the orcs, elves and knights is incredibly deep and multidismentional. The story itself may be quite a hard to follow,  exspecially if you haven't red the book or checked the plot from Wikipedia, but it doesn't matter. The film is so visually powerful, magical and even beautiful that you can just share the cup of popcorns with your friends (or even better, with your family) and enjoy the movie itself's. And, all in all, Peter Jackson has made good choices with the actors and actresses; Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Miranda Otto and many others.

February:
- In the middle of the cold winter is nice to watch something warming. The Night listener is a fascinating movie about a middle-aged man and a teenage boy. Gabriel Noone (Robin Williams) is a story teller of the local radio, and his' life seems to be pretty OK with thousands of fans, who open their radio every evening at eleven o'clock. The truth is that Gabriel is quite miserable - his' relationship with his' long-time-being partner Jess (Bobby Cannavale) is fallling into pieces and working to the radio is getting more boring day by day. However, one day everything changes, when Gabriel "meets" this young boy Pete (Rory Culkin), who has an AIDS.
It is a sad - but also hopeful - story about wrong kind of relationships, cruel world and exspecially young boy who's looking for the dad he never had. And, of course, about a man who's looking for the sun he either never had.

March:
- The March is full of choices. For an example the high-schools and other second-level-of-education-schools starts looking for new pupils - and you are the one who has to make the choice about where to go, what to study. Other important choices is doing Jim Carrey (once again) in the film Bruce Almighty. Nothing special, just a hilarious movie about a man who gets the powers of the God. Doesn't that tell quite enough? A romantic comedy.

April:
- If you haven't seen Forrest Gump, now it's a time for that. There are many reasons why it's definitely one of the best films ever made:
- phenomenal story, truthful enough, but something fablet
- great actors and actresses (Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Penn, Gary Sinise)
- the movie is emotional, dramatic, funny, exciting - everything in good mix, nothing too mutch or too little
Maybe that's why the film won all in all six Oscar-prices - best performance by an actor in a leading role, best director (Robert Zemeckis), best film editin, best picture, best visual effects, best adapted screenplay.
The storyline of Forrest Gump is absolutely interesting, but unfortunately too long to type here, so if you don't know (!!!) but are interested, please check:

Believe me, you don't want to miss this movie.

May:
- Michael Douglas is a one of the best actors ever lived. He's one of my favourites, and it's not because of his mystic charm, it's because he's incredibly talented and he has been lucky enough to have the great directors and brilliant stories/roles to play. The most known and - I think - the best ones: Wall Street, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, falling Down, Fatal Attraction. It's amazing how flexible he is with the roletypes; the Wall Street - character Gordon Gekko is greedy, evil, cunning, conniving hard businessman, whereas Dan Gallagher from the fatal attraction is loving, carrying and responsible father and husband - who, unfortunately, fells into an affair with a mentaly sick, lunatic woman, who makes his' (and his' family's) life as a hell. So both of the characters are kind of lost in somewhere, Gordon in a maze of the business and the moral, Dan in a relationship and the choices of life.

June:
- Monty Python's Life of Brian. While waiting summer holidays of schools, there's good time to watch something happy and refreshing. Monthy Python's Life of Brian is simply about the life of a man called Brian (year 1 - 36 AD/CE) (Graham Chapman), whose life is certainly full of unexpected happenings. A famous film, directed by - surprise, surprise - Monty Python. If you didn't pass your school-tests or get in the high-school - or wherever - you wanted to, cheer yourself up with the mantra of the film: "Always look on a bright side of life."

July:
- At the heat of the summer is an excellent time for watching World War II -drama about a young english boy in the middle of the broken Japan. Empire of the Sun is very powerful and rare film about the innocent (or less-so-innocent) civilians of war. It's a story about a weak choir boy, Jamie (later an American sailor, Basie, nicknames him "Jim") (Christian Bale), who growns in the middle of death and killing, without parents - he only has this father-figure, Basie, who couldn't care less of red-haired teenaged boy, who's desperately trying to find a base for his life. After all, as the war goes on, also the feelings and relationships keeps going.

August:
- Get ready for the battle. Schools and most of the jobs starts, so it's time to get the helmet on an turn the radio to sing: "Highway to the Dangerzone" This theme song of Top Gun is so tense that you'll hear it in your ears days after you've seen the movie. Tom Cruise starrs in this thrilling film about aviator's life. The movie is full of beautiful romantic scenes, but also rough battles of the airforces - and, of course, sad losses, tears and blood. Also a great movie about flying is The Aviator, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

September:
- If you haven't seen Top Gun, don't even try to watch Hot Shots. These two movies belong together. Hot Shots is also one of the best ones from Charlie Sheen, when he still had his' life under controll. Sheen is also doing a noteworthy role in Wall street -movies with Michael Douglas, so, all in all, you really need to see these films.

Phehhewww, now I'm gonna take a hand-bath.

Mirva
P.S. What the heck is wrong with this picture-programm?
