I could easily talk about movies more than hours and hours, but I don't want to make you bored. So I've made a little list about the movies I like and would suggest to others. Here's a lots of movies from diffierent genres, and some of them I have picked up only because I find them to be quite interesting - yes, I haven't even seen all these movies I'm going to talk about. But the curiosity isn't always just a bad thing, is it? So if you have time only for a one or two movies in a month, please consider:

October:
- Here in UK the Halloween is a huge happening. The stores starts to sell all kinds of Halloween-stuff from the very first days of October, and the boom keeps going for the whole month. And what would be better movie for this time period than Tim Burton's classic Sleepy Hollow? The movie is actually one of my favourites of all the times, and I could watch it over and over again without getting bored. I don't usually even like Johnny Depp's movies, but this one is an exception. The actor himself was quite a young man while they were making this movie, and the role of determinent (but also pretty squeamish) young medical examiner is not his most known-ones. As usual, Burton has made good work with this gothic movie, and althought it's not so scary, the athmostphere of the film is absolutely breathtaking. So if you are not afraid of the headless horseman, this is the movie you must see - if you haven't yet.
November:
- After celebrating Halloween you are still in the mood of spooky ghosts and creepy pumpkins, but a part of you is already looking forward to start playing christmas songs and cutting snowflakes to the windows. That's quite a challenging combination, but as we know, Tim Burton has done it again; The nightmare Before Christmas. It is a perfecct movie for the time between Halloween and Christmas. The story is about Jack Skellington (Chris Saradon, Danny Elfman), the pumpking-king of The Halloween-town, who feds up with the whole Halloween. Jack finds The Christmas-town, and starts to spread the merry thought of Christmas all around him - but because Jack is a skeleton and the pumpkin king, he's still a big part of the Halloween-town, and even when he has turned his' coat his' heart still belongs to the Halloween-town - or does it?December:
- Christmas is the time of being together and calming down. Bake some gingerbread-men and light up a few candles, then take a nice seat and watch a warm, lovefull christmas-movie. I know, there are a lots of crap, cheap movies thats' only points are relationship drama and Christmas, but there are also some real pearls, for an example The Christmas Carol (Walt Disney Entertainment). There are also many other versions of this tale, but I think there's something very special in this movie. Yes, and also Jim Carrey. You probably know the plot from Charles Dickinson's book, but I tell anyway: Scrooge, a mean and greedy (and very, very lonely) old man thinks that the whole Christmas is just a waste of time and money ("Bah! Humbug!"), until something extraordinary happens, and he concretely takes touch with the good - and some bad too - spirits of Christmas. A Very emmotional movie. The other Christmas-film that I have to mention is It's Very merry Muppet Christmas Movie. I've seen it once, and I was quite a young, so I don't remember mutch about this film, but I do remember it was lovely, lovely, lovely.
+ one interesting:
I haven't seen this film, but Rare Exports seems quite interesting. It is not as soft and pretty as the two others I mentioned, but that's exactly the point. It is (as far as I know) a very diffierent kind of a Christmas-film, maybe even a little bit scary ( but atleast dark-coloured). When the Santa Claus is not a gentle, warm and lovingly father of Christmas (he's a grumpy, weird, scary old rag) anymore, and the whole beautiful, white, magical winter-wonderland becomes into a huge graveyeard, is there anything you could trust on anymore?
January:
- The new year brings a lots of changes within, but also chances. What would be better way to start the new year with than the true classic LOTR? The Lord Of The Rings -trilogy is the very first proper fantasy film, and it's the mother of all the others. Even if you didn't normally like fantasy movies try these ones. J.R.R Tolkien's world of the orcs, elves and knights is incredibly deep and multidismentional. The story itself may be quite a hard to follow, exspecially if you haven't red the book or checked the plot from Wikipedia, but it doesn't matter. The film is so visually powerful, magical and even beautiful that you can just share the cup of popcorns with your friends (or even better, with your family) and enjoy the movie itself's. And, all in all, Peter Jackson has made good choices with the actors and actresses; Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Miranda Otto and many others.
February:
- In the middle of the cold winter is nice to watch something warming. The Night listener is a fascinating movie about a middle-aged man and a teenage boy. Gabriel Noone (Robin Williams) is a story teller of the local radio, and his' life seems to be pretty OK with thousands of fans, who open their radio every evening at eleven o'clock. The truth is that Gabriel is quite miserable - his' relationship with his' long-time-being partner Jess (Bobby Cannavale) is fallling into pieces and working to the radio is getting more boring day by day. However, one day everything changes, when Gabriel "meets" this young boy Pete (Rory Culkin), who has an AIDS.
It is a sad - but also hopeful - story about wrong kind of relationships, cruel world and exspecially young boy who's looking for the dad he never had. And, of course, about a man who's looking for the sun he either never had.
March:
- The March is full of choices. For an example the high-schools and other second-level-of-education-schools starts looking for new pupils - and you are the one who has to make the choice about where to go, what to study. Other important choices is doing Jim Carrey (once again) in the film Bruce Almighty. Nothing special, just a hilarious movie about a man who gets the powers of the God. Doesn't that tell quite enough? A romantic comedy.
April:
- If you haven't seen Forrest Gump, now it's a time for that. There are many reasons why it's definitely one of the best films ever made:
- phenomenal story, truthful enough, but something fablet
- great actors and actresses (Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Penn, Gary Sinise)- the movie is emotional, dramatic, funny, exciting - everything in good mix, nothing too mutch or too little
Maybe that's why the film won all in all six Oscar-prices - best performance by an actor in a leading role, best director (Robert Zemeckis), best film editin, best picture, best visual effects, best adapted screenplay.
The storyline of Forrest Gump is absolutely interesting, but unfortunately too long to type here, so if you don't know (!!!) but are interested, please check:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest_GumpBelieve me, you don't want to miss this movie.
May:
- Michael Douglas is a one of the best actors ever lived. He's one of my favourites, and it's not because of his mystic charm, it's because he's incredibly talented and he has been lucky enough to have the great directors and brilliant stories/roles to play. The most known and - I think - the best ones: Wall Street, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, falling Down, Fatal Attraction. It's amazing how flexible he is with the roletypes; the Wall Street - character Gordon Gekko is greedy, evil, cunning, conniving hard businessman, whereas Dan Gallagher from the fatal attraction is loving, carrying and responsible father and husband - who, unfortunately, fells into an affair with a mentaly sick, lunatic woman, who makes his' (and his' family's) life as a hell. So both of the characters are kind of lost in somewhere, Gordon in a maze of the business and the moral, Dan in a relationship and the choices of life.
June:
- Monty Python's Life of Brian. While waiting summer holidays of schools, there's good time to watch something happy and refreshing. Monthy Python's Life of Brian is simply about the life of a man called Brian (year 1 - 36 AD/CE) (Graham Chapman), whose life is certainly full of unexpected happenings. A famous film, directed by - surprise, surprise - Monty Python. If you didn't pass your school-tests or get in the high-school - or wherever - you wanted to, cheer yourself up with the mantra of the film: "Always look on a bright side of life."
July:
- At the heat of the summer is an excellent time for watching World War II -drama about a young english boy in the middle of the broken Japan. Empire of the Sun is very powerful and rare film about the innocent (or less-so-innocent) civilians of war. It's a story about a weak choir boy, Jamie (later an American sailor, Basie, nicknames him "Jim") (Christian Bale), who growns in the middle of death and killing, without parents - he only has this father-figure, Basie, who couldn't care less of red-haired teenaged boy, who's desperately trying to find a base for his life. After all, as the war goes on, also the feelings and relationships keeps going. August:
- Get ready for the battle. Schools and most of the jobs starts, so it's time to get the helmet on an turn the radio to sing: "Highway to the Dangerzone" This theme song of Top Gun is so tense that you'll hear it in your ears days after you've seen the movie. Tom Cruise starrs in this thrilling film about aviator's life. The movie is full of beautiful romantic scenes, but also rough battles of the airforces - and, of course, sad losses, tears and blood. Also a great movie about flying is The Aviator, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
September:
- If you haven't seen Top Gun, don't even try to watch Hot Shots. These two movies belong together. Hot Shots is also one of the best ones from Charlie Sheen, when he still had his' life under controll. Sheen is also doing a noteworthy role in Wall street -movies with Michael Douglas, so, all in all, you really need to see these films.
Phehhewww, now I'm gonna take a hand-bath.
Mirva
P.S. What the heck is wrong with this picture-programm?

Love the Blog, I like how you put the films into different seasons. I don't agree completely with your tastes in films but I think that's because I really dislike Tim Burton and find seasonal films poor. But Lord of the Rings is one of my favourite films ever (I can't wait until The Hobbit is released!), Forrest Gump is also a favourite too. The Night listener seems like a very interesting film so I might give it a watch. Anyway, great Blog! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment :--) to be honest, I have to admit I enjoyed The Night listener more when I read the original book (written by Armistead Maupin), it's still one of my favourite books. But the movie is very very interesting, I really think it was worth of seeing :)
